Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least six different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.
At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.
Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.
I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.
My Project
Do you remember your favorite books as a child? Maybe the author took you away to a magical land or created a world so complex that you could imagine yourself living in there. Or, perhaps, you look back on a time when you find a text that was so hilarious, so gut-busting and funny, that you almost couldn't make it to the end because there were tears in your eyes?
My students love reading, and they also enjoy having a wild, weird, and hilarious sense of humor.
I want to be able to combine these two things into one project, so I am requesting books that represent humorous fiction titles that will get my kids laughing in our classroom.
Students asked me to find books that they might love, so I am requesting books like A Cat is a Cat (Not A Dog!), Max the Brave, Big Bad Bubble, Those Darn Squirrels Fly South, and Dragons Love Tacos 2: The Sequel. We will use these books during Independent Reading as I continue to expand the selection in our classroom library. Given that research has shown independent reading to be one of the most critical foundational elements of a child's literacy development, it is essential that students have a wide array of texts that they can select. Students will also be able to write book reviews that they share with their classmates.
