My Project

For middle schoolers, reading isn't exactly considered "fun." I always tell my students that the reason they believe this is because they haven't found a book they enjoy! Every single item in this project is a graphic novel. Students love graphic novels because they are colorful, have photos, and remind them of cartoons. In other words, we're tricking them into reading! The other important part of this collection of books is that they are diverse and tell perspectives that are usually overlooked in youth novels. Pashmina and American Born Chinese explore issues of identity and racism. Nat Enough describes the challenges of middle school and finding one's place. Hey Kiddo tells what it's like to live having lost both parents. Not only will these books help my students learn to love reading, but it will also help them learn empathy and perspective.
