My students are in a socioeconomically and racially diverse neighborhood in the South Bronx. School is a safe place where I can provide support to my students in as many ways possible.
My students thrive on making connections, thinking critically, evaluating each other and the world around them.
They love to read and discuss books together. Every week, students get a chance to visit the class library and check out books to read. Their favorite time of day is independent reading where they can curl up on the rug with a pillow and a stack of books they checked out from our class library. They are excited about being able to now read chapter books as their reading levels grow.
My students are thoughtful, clever and excited about the future. They inspire me on a daily basis to do as much as I can for others and make a difference.
My Project
As an avid reader, I have worked hard to assure my students have access to all types of books. One of their favorite times of day is when they get a chance to read their independent reading books and shop for books to check out from the library. Students get a chance to read on the rug, curl up with a pillow, and explore the bins of books.
I want to continue to foster that enthusiasm for my young readers by providing them with as many book options as possible.
Ranging from realistic fiction, fantasy fiction, non-fiction and poetry- I want them to continue to embrace their passion for reading.
These books will contribute to their love for reading and expose them to many different genres. My student's enthusiasm mirrors my own. As someone who has loved to read since the day I learned how, I am constantly sharing my love of books and personal favorites with my students. The addition of these books to our library will provide my students with a variety of opportunities to grow as readers and most importantly, as individuals. These books were handpicked to emphasize and highlight different cultures, holidays and experiences. These books will enhance our reader's workshop and encourage student's to expand their knowledge. This will help me continue to change my student's perspective on reading- and encourage them that it can be a BLAST!!
