Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an energetic and enthusiastic group of second graders that desperately need some vocabulary enrichment. They are English language learners from low socio-economic families so books are not a necessity at home. Most of my students are beginning readers who just need books at their level to build their confidence. They need books that will help expand their vocabulary and help them be and feel successful. It is such a joy to see their faces light up when they are able to read a book at their reading level.
My Project
By giving my students a variety of books at their reading level, we can increase their vocabulary and build their confidence in their reading abilities. All it takes is one book to open them up to love and desire to read. Reading is all around us. I want to build their confidence and expand their vocabulary so that they do not give up in school because they think they cannot do it.
The curriculum we are given is a second grade curriculum but the majority of my students are not reading at grade level.
They struggle with the text. By providing them with books at their level I hope to build their confidence and encourage them to keep trying. Without books at their level they continue to struggle and become frustrated and give up. I want them to feel that success when they can read a book so they do not give up.
