This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students in our school range from first grade to eighth grade. I work with students in third, fourth, fifth and seventh grades. Academically, many of them are reading close to grade level but are not quite there yet. They really need an extra push to move forward in their academic goals.
The students in my class are involved in a wonderful program that promotes independent reading.
The students move through several stations which include directly working with me, completing work independently, and practicing individual skills on the computer. Additional books, would allow students to have a varied selection as part of their independent reading time.
My Project
Independent reading is an integral part of our reading program. The students spend 15 to 20 minutes everyday reading at their own independent level. They love to choose books and choice promotes motivation. The students are motivated because they have ownership of the books they read.
One problem we face is that there are a limited number of books that come with the program.
I would like to provide my students with additional books so they have more options to consider when selecting a book. There are also new books which have been published within the last few years and my students always ask if they can read them. I would love to have copies of newer titles to include in our library as well.
