Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Recent research into the Science of Reading tells us that harnessing the power of phonics and sight words builds strong readers. My second graders are coming from behind as many of them must struggle to become English speakers at the same time they are trying to learn to read. They need to be able to read on grade level in order to build understanding across the curriculum, which means both they and I will need to work hard and fast this year to reach their goals. Studies show that learning through play provides a greater quantity of opportunities for practice at a faster pace than many traditional teaching methods.
Our class needs highly-motivating, engaging literacy games and materials that will give my learners FUN opportunities for powerful practice with phonics and sight words.
Phonics cards and dice, sight word fishing and swatter games, word-building dominoes, and much more, will build a classroom environment where students are excited to complete their required individual assignments so they can quickly choose a literacy activity to work on with friends. These activities will be a daily staple in our classroom throughout the school year. As we "play" with reading, not only will practice making perfect, but it will also make permanent, and my students will rapidly gain ground and confidence in the areas of reading that they are struggling with. Phonics and sight words will quickly become strengths, and reading will become easy. The best part is, that they will develop a love for reading at the same time because they will be having fun, interacting with friends, and supporting each other in a relaxed environment instead of anxiously dreading intimidating interactions with words! I'm so excited to make reading FUN-damental in our classroom.
