Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are as diverse as can be. In my classroom I have kids from different backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, religions, races, and ethnicities. I teach language arts and social studies to 65 unique and wonderful students.
My students are full of energy and imagination.
Due to the fact that we are a low income, low performing school, my students face difficulties at home that students from higher income families don't have to deal with. However, they still come to school happy and eager to do well.
My Project
Unfortunately, many of my students do not read for fun. They have not found books that they want to fully immerse themselves in. My students seem to associate reading with boring school work. However, their eyes light up when I give them a new book that is different from anything they read for school.
Since the goal of every reading teacher is to create lifelong readers, I plan to use the new books to spark an interest in reading for my students.
Many of the students at my school are reading below grade level. Using the books from this project, such as Magic Tree House, My Weird School , and Goosebumps would allow me to introduce my students to books they find interesting. With these books the students will have fun while developing a love for reading and expanding their reading skills.
