My students need books for choice reading. Finding the right book is extremely important for students. Some of the books are more expensive because they are new releases that the library doesn't have.
My students are all learning to become independent learners. They are eager to learn, love to ask questions, and enjoy class (so they say). Some students struggle with attention issues and homework completion, so I try to work with them as much as possible in class on assignments. They struggle with reading for enjoyment.
My lovely students are Nebraska 7th graders from a semi-small town outside of the capital city.
They love music and videos that I show with my lessons, and we are learning how to become better readers because a lot of the 7th graders are below the standard 7th grade reading level. I want them to be successful, not just in my class, but in every class they take, so reading is paramount!
My Project
I need help growing my classroom library and fostering a love for reading!
Reading for fun is something a lot of my students don't experience; the only way to get them to enjoy reading is to find books they love.
As a teacher, it is my job to put books into the hands of students that will draw them into being "forever readers." In the research I have done, I have learned that giving students the right books and allowing opportunities to read expands their comprehension and reading enjoyment.
I love seeing the students excited about reading, and the best way for that to happen is to have books in the classroom that appeal to them and push them to be more advanced thinkers and readers.
I'm asking for a vast array of newer and/or extremely popular books for students in 7th grade. These books will be used for many years and by numerous students. Students from other classrooms come in and check out the books I have available. I'm constantly getting requests for new books.
Two examples of books on the list are "Night Divided" and "Stupid Fast." "Night Divided" is about a family that is separated by the Berlin wall, and "Stupid Fast" is about a boy who joins the football team. Both books have themes and issues that average teenagers go through, so they can learn from these while gaining comprehension skills.
Almost all of the books I have chosen are books that the students have requested, but haven't been able to find in the school library. I chose a wide variety of genres and topics for students to relate to and learn from.
Please foster a love of reading of my students by helping expand my classroom library.
