My students need access to graphic novels in the classroom. They are learning to love reading and graphic novels often provide a gateway for students to becoming lifelong readers.
My students are diverse in a number of ways but are united as a family in the classroom. We help and support one another, work together to solve problems, and enjoy learning with and from one another. There are 27 of us in our class. We have a variety of interests represented in our room, from reading to sports to science to art.
Our school is always filled to the brim with young scholars; at last count, we had 470 students here.
More than half of the students at our school come from low-income households. We are a neighborhood school in many cases, but also have some students from all over our town. We have a number of students who speak languages other than English at home. We value our diversity and cherish our unity.
My Project
My students love graphic novels but our classroom bookshelves do not have many options in that genre at this time. Graphic novels often open the door to a love of reading for the sake of enjoyment. They are engaging and appealing to many kids, and they still include complex plots, interesting character development, and much more.
When reading graphic novels, students benefit from having pictures to support them in understanding the text.
The illustrations also add an extra layer for them to consider and analyze as they read. This support is especially valuable to students who are learning English or have difficulty reading. Some of the books chosen from this list stand on their own in series and others are “remakes” of traditional novels. The remakes will help my struggling students encounter the stories they might not be able to yet without the support.
Everyone deserves to experience great literature, develop a love of reading for enjoyment, and to have access to genres that light their fire.
