I teach in a rural area with an approximate population of 1000. It is a logging town with several mills. I teach in a K-6 school with 260 students. There is one other school in town for grades 7-12. I have 24 students: 10 girls and 14 boys. 7 of my children are extremely behind in reading; 13 children are behind in math. 22 are Caucasian, 2 have mixed heritage. 11 children are in single-parent homes. 2 are raised by a single dad, 9 by a single mom. Most of these children come from low-income homes. I have several students who receive food packages every Friday so that they have food to eat over the weekend. Most of these children never go anywhere to expand their horizons. There is an Indian casino nearby and the kids think it is a treat if their parents take them there.
My students will use these iPads to practice a variety of phonics skills; they will also use them to read ebooks. Studies have shown that children who read 20 minutes a day do better in school and are more likely to graduate high school and go on to graduate from college. There are so many reading apps now. The kids can read books and take comprehension quizzes. Our school reading curriculum even has online learning games and reading assessments! The students absolutely love to get on the iPads and take quizzes. This really makes a difference for those kids who get test anxiety.
