Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first grade students are a very sweet and loving bunch! They are very enthusiastic about their learning and all the fun projects we do!

I teach in an ICT class in Corona, NY.

There are seven special education students in the class. A majority of the students come from a low income household with parents who do not speak English, therefore it is very difficult for their parents to help them with reading at home. Many of the students struggle with reading, but I am proud to say they have made a great amount of improvement with a lot of love and encouragement from me, my co-teacher and my paraprofessional.

One thing we do in our classroom that is very important and has a great impact on students, is Guided Reading. Guided Reading helps students develop as individual readers with the support of the teacher. It is done in small groups of a maximum of six students. Guided reading has beneficial effects on helping student's develop reading skills. It is very effective in improving student's fundamental reading skills as well as comprehension skills.

My Project

Guided Reading is very important in the early years of school. It helps students learn how to decode words with assistance so they can eventually self-correct when reading on their own. With guided reading, children get the chance to discuss the text and offer opinions etc. They learn specific reading skills such as inferring, predicting and retelling. They also practice writing skills they will need as well as word study skills. All of this is done in small groups, which is greatly beneficial to the students.

In order to teach this way, we need a few very important materials!

One of them being guided reading book sets so the children are exposed to many different genres. Another item is personal whiteboards and magnets for the students to use for word study. Lastly, we are in need of notebooks to do guided writing lessons because after all, reading and writing coincide with one another.

The students and I will be so happy and excited to receive these items. Every time there is a new book, or they get to work with new materials, their eyes light up! When a student is motivated they learn a lot better!
