"When readers are lost in a book, they stand a good chance of finding themselves." Kylene Beers
My students live into to this belief everyday.
They each come from different backgrounds and are full of energy and curiosity. Over the school year it has been a privilege to watch my readers strengthen their learning identity through literature. The availability of rich and meaningful text is the greatest tool we can provide. My students and I live and learn together at an inquiry-based, Title I school, where we watch our wonders grow.
My Project
Each week, my third graders come together with their second grade book buddies to get "lost in books." This cross-grade partnership offers more than just a chance for students to grow as readers, but offers students opportunities to build relationships, share new learning, and engage in meaningful conversations around literature. Recently, we hosted an evening book buddy celebration for students and their families. It was a huge hit! This hour gave students an opportunity to share books with each other, their families, and even cousins. Together, the second grade teacher and I purchased a few hundred dollars worth of books in order to send EVERY child home with a book. We believe having a well stocked classroom library is only half of the battle. Students deserve to have access to high quality literature at their finger tips when at home.
We know becoming a life long reader is based on developing a deep love of reading.
It is my belief and responsibility to ensure my students not only develop this deep love in school but at home as well. This is where I need your help. Your donations will go to build a lending library for my students and their book buddies. We have planned several more celebrations throughout the school year and hopefully during the summer months too. The lending library will open the door for students to have a wide variety of high interest titles to choose from. Your kind donations will help fund series such as Who Would Win, Mercy Watson, Bink and Gollie, and Katie Woo. The Treehouse books and Dog Man series are other titles I would like to have as well. Thank you in advance!
