My Project

My students are really cool - shouldn't their classroom library be too?

Please help me build a classroom library that is as wildly interesting and diverse as my students.

My students are going to be the pioneering engineers, writers, activists, coders, senators, scientists, teachers, pilots, chefs, psychologists, and ballers of tomorrow - truly changing the game with their varied talents. They deserve books that speak to them - and they deserve to have them at their fingertips.

No matter their path after high school, I hope my students will be able to read with fluency and confidence and also to know the joy of reading for their own pleasure and purpose. Finding an irresistible book that you just can't seem to put down, is such an important experience in becoming a capable and eager reader.

Each day I offer time for independent reading, and I have often found that reluctant readers forget their library books at home. I believe this is in large part because they have not "clicked" with a book yet. Having an exceptional classroom library will allow me to spend less time writing notes for students to trek to the library (greater than a 5 min walk each way) only to come back empty-handed and instead spend more time conferencing with students and helping them select a perfect match book amongst the amazing titles on our classroom bookshelf.

The books that will be purchased will offer opportunities for my students to see themselves in literature and also to see beyond themselves, exploring the worlds and lives of people that they can - for now - only imagine. My goal is that this classroom library is filled with so many irresistible books that every reader in my room can find a title they feel is cool.
