My sixth grade students come from a very diverse community. They thrive when given opportunities to explore education in alternate ways, for example field trips and other hands-on experiences. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to leave their hometown to experience the world around them. These students are special because they want to be successful in life and they have the drive to become what they want to be in the future. They are smart, inquisitive learners who deserve the best in education and I want to provide that for them.
The sixth grade ELA team will be teaching a unit called "Heroes of the Illiad" this year. We are in need of the novels to accompany this exciting unit. The book is titled, "Black Ships Before Troy: The Story of the Illiad," by Rosemary Sutcliff. It is a great unit with many activities to foster literacy development. It also ties in mythology and ancient civilizations.
The students will be close reading the novel in class and completing vocabulary, writing, and creative projects that go along with the story.
There is also a reader's theater selection in our unit to give students the opportunity to act out a comparative selection.
Having these books will help our students read, understand and appreciate literature.
