My students need books that are on their appropriate level to help them thrive at reading!
"Ms. B, I never thought I would be able to read." A 5-year-old boy enthusiastically shouted those words with a big grin on his face. He continued by stating that his family told him he would never be able to read. My heart immediately sunk as I pictured his family telling him those words. At the beginning of the year, he entered our kindergarten class not able to recognize any letters or sounds in the alphabet. Just like many other students in my class, my students lack the instructional support at home.
They live with family members who are working around-the-clock to make ends meet and constantly bounce back and forth between relatives and friends, resulting in lack of instructional support in the home.
All of my students qualified for free lunch, as well as breakfast this year. My students are able to have the consistency of 2 meals a day, which positively impacts their learning and focus throughout the day. I feel greatly responsible to maximize the instructional time that I have from 8am to 4pm with my students. I believe that every child has the greatest potential, and my job is to allow them to discover their potential!
Kindergarten is the foundation for all reading. Students learn letters, sounds, and blend them together to create words. When a child learns how to read, the light bulb shines bright and their love for learning grows! At this age, students need books that are developmentally appropriate for them! If a book is too difficult, students will become frustrated and overwhelmed. We want to set our kiddos up for success.
Therefore, the leveled library will give our students the ability to thrive at reading on their level!
Books are not found often in our students' homes. The majority of reading is all learned in the classroom. The library cart and book bins will allow for organization of the library. The individual book bins allow the students to have their own bin to place their specific books that they are working on!
This project would be the largest blessing for our students. I will always fight for these student's, and I know that these books will allow for great success! Thank you for considering donating to this project. You are greatly appreciated!
