My students are survivors of the very recent California Camp Fire in Paradise and Magalia. They have lost so much; their homes, families, pets, and their belongings. One consistent aspects of my students' lives is their school and teacher. They come to school in hopes of some normalcy and they get that, but unfortunately my students have had so much trauma from losing so much that they are not able to focus, function or feel comforted in school like they did prior to the Camp Fire.
My students often come to school with stress and sadness that they cannot even comprehend or manage, therefore these feelings are revealed through distractions, restlessness, and physical behavior.
I want the best learning experiences and opportunities for my students to have a quality education. I can provide many of those aspects for them but I need help in creating a space that will be calming for my students, a place that they can comfortably gather together, get caught up in wonderful and entertaining stories and just forget about their troubles for awhile.
Having an inviting and Comfortable rug for my students to sit on and a comfortable chair to sit on as I read to my students will make a big difference in our reading experience together. These items will create an inviting, comforting and designated space for my students to listen to fiction and non-fiction stories as a class, reading with a buddy, reading to one's self and even playing a game on the comfortable rug with a friend.
These items will bring a nice atmosphere to our classroom and motivate students to want to hear stories and read stories in that designated area because it is comforting, in turn making learning fun and enjoyable.
