My students begin the day just like any kindergarten classroom in our school. However, after lunch my students head to their outdoor classroom in the woods to explore, create, and discover in nature. They are developing an empathy and compassion for the outdoors.
My students love being in their forest classroom.
They enjoy climbing trees, playing in the mud, making discoveries in nature, using their imaginations, building forts, going on adventures, and just being kids. They spend the afternoon in the outdoor classroom immersed in child led play and discovery. The lead teacher and myself are present to encourage their creativity, risk taking and discoveries. They are encouraged to work out their own problems with their peers by talking to each other to solve the issues that arise. Students are learning from their experiences each day in the outdoor space they have made their own. Our school is very supportive of the outdoor kindergarten class. Our administration sees the need in getting children out doors as much as possible for learning opportunities. All students in our school have the opportunity to explore outdoors.
My Project
The hammocks will provide a classroom in the trees for our students. We will foster imagination through reading. It will move our indoor classroom, outside! The hammocks will also be a place for me to provide one-on-one instruction for students that require extra academic attention. The students' will have valuable instruction time while being able to experience the wonders of nature.
We teach students the love of learning through the beauty that nature has to offer.
The hammocks will combine our love of reading with our love of nature! We will foster outdoor learning through discovery and real life application of the standards we teach inside and outside of the building.
