I teach ELA and social studies to two classes of fourth graders who are eager to learn. My classroom is not just a place to learn, it is also a place where my students discover that they are able to change the world through the choices and decisions they make in their lives.
The majority of students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch, meaning they qualify for at least part, if not all, of the cost of their meals to be paid for by the district due to low parent income at home.
Many of my students come from low-income homes and this can negatively impact their ability to learn successfully.
I teach readers at all reading levels - from above level, to on level, to below level. However, they all come to school wanting to learn with positive attitudes about school, no matter what is going on in their lives. They are hard workers who want to do good things with their lives and they know it starts here in the classroom.
My Project
My students need copies of each of the Sunshine State Young Reader novels so they can read them and then vote at the end of the school year for their favorite book.
Each year, our state provides a list of 15 novels for grades 3-5 that students can read, and then allows them to vote on their favorite book for a state award.
Our school provides an incentive program for books read, helping to increase involvement in this program. My students LOVE to read these books, but often, they are checked out of the library. By having our own personal class set, my students will be able to share the books among themselves, increasing the number of books they are able to read. My goal is to have at least half of my students (22 out of 44) read EVERY book this year to help them grow as readers and expand their reading options.
The books on the state list are current novels that are engaging and enlightening for my students. The novels provide fun and interesting concepts and events, which help the students enjoy reading, which, in turn, helps to increase comprehension.. And as we know, increased comprehension helps to make for better and more engaged readers. And doesn't the world need more amazing readers?!?
