In every way I can think of, I am trying to make reading exciting and vital for my students. In addition to quiet reading and Read Alouds, I am hoping to share with my students the fun of reading with a group.
My students are amazing, of course.
I have children from more than eight countries, who speak many different languages at home. Our school is full of language learners and families eager to help their kids learn, but whose comfort in reading with their children is limited. My students are first graders. They are just beginning to decode, and as they make meanings of the new words they can read they are incredibly excited.
During read aloud time my kids are rapt; when I say I'm going to read more than one book there is a murmur of excitement. And during their quiet reading time they always want to share the books they are reading with their friends. Because many of the students are limited in their ability with standard English and many do not come from families in which reading is a prized activity, I am excited that I can provide such an environment for them at school.
My Project
With an enriched classroom library full of books in different genres and at different levels, I am able to share my excitement about reading with my students. I already do this daily, and I am very happy when children take advantage of the opportunity to take home books and share them with their families.
With a more ample library of literature sets, I hope to introduce my students to the inspiration of reading with others and learning what other readers think of a given book. There are so many ways to enjoy reading and to learn from books, and I want to inculcate my kids with as many habits of good readers as possible.
As they emerge into competence with decoding books, my students begin to share their summaries and reflections on books.
Being good readers means not only decoding and comprehending, but also delighting in sharing books. That is what I hope to create for my students with the literature circles that guided leveled sets of books will support.
