This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach K-4 music at a low income school district in Pennsylvania, where we are identified as a Title I school. Although my students face many challenges, they come to school eager and ready to learn in new and exciting ways. My students love to explore and create.
In my eyes, school is a place for the students to escape and have the freedom to grow, learn and experience life as happy as it can and should be.
Many of my students enter the music classroom agitated or upset, but always leave feeling joyful and at ease.
They enjoy being exposed to different musical genres, cultures, and instruments. My students need a chance to explore, create, move, and feel welcome.
My Project
One of the things I remember most about growing up was reading books with my parents and teachers. Unfortunately, books are expensive and most of my students cannot afford to have books in the home. Additionally, money I receive as a music teacher usually goes towards replacing or purchasing new instruments.
My students love the few books I have purchased on my own, and are always so excited when they see a new book pop up!
With these books, I hope to create well-rounded, imaginative musicians and readers.
Building my classroom library will give not only give my students more opportunities to read, but will also introduce them to instruments, musical groups, famous composers or artists, and will provide listening/movement opportunities.
