Do you remember that feeling of reading a fantastic book and then waiting to talk to someone about it? I want that for my fifth-grade students! This year I will be teaching reading workshop to two fifth grade classes in Brooklyn, NY and these students need diverse, well-curated books to be windows and mirrors to their lives. They are voracious readers and each day they will spend at least 45 minutes reading, thinking about the characters, lessons and main ideas in their books. Having books for partnerships and clubs will help them become lifelong readers and critical thinkers!
My Project
This project will help 42 fifth grade students in New York City have access to sets of books for partnerships and fiction book clubs, helping them raise their level of character, interpretation and critical literacy work. The 80 books will give each class an opportunity for choice in books. With these books, they will increase their volume and stamina.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of well-written fiction books that will allow them to read independently, at their own grade level in the company of others.
These books will be windows and mirrors in their lives.
