Like to curl up with a good book? So do students! I want my classroom to be warm and inviting to readers.
I am in the midst of a transition.
I have taught 5th grade for 13 years and am transferring to Kindergarten which requires not only a different mind set, but different materials. My inner-city Kindergarten students come to school eager and ready to learn. For many of these students it will be their first official school experience. With this in mind, I want these students to continue to want to learn and come to school. I want them to still be eager and willing to learn after kindergarten and actually for their entire lifetime.
My Project
To create students who in turn become life long learners, I envision a nice, inviting environment. We already have lots of shelves of books just waiting to be explored. I feel that if there were a comfortable area to sit and enjoy the books and complete other tasks, students would be drawn to engage more. I am requesting a reading corner classroom carpet and comfy pillows. The more time students spend with text the better foundation they create for their life long learning. Providing students with a great place to practice handling texts, telling stories and reading words increases their reading readiness and ability. Building a strong foundation in literacy skills is one of the most important factors in later success in school and therefore life.
If students develop into life long learners, there is no telling how far they will go in life!
As a teacher, that is my goal. With reading being one of the most important skills a person will acquire, I can think of nothing better to interest them in. I feel that the carpet and pillows will entice the students to want to get involved more with the books. This will be a fun environment to sit and will also provide a break from the rest of the school environment.
