My students need Scholastic Math Magazine to improve their math skills as well as improve comprehension and make real world connections in mathematics.

My students are learning how important math is and are beginning to see how math relates to the real world. Many students score well below grade level in reading and math at the beginning of the year so the time we spend working on improving those skills are precious.
The boys and girls are middle school ages 11-14 in a neighborhood that has been striving to rebuild since the late 60's.
They want to learn, to be given a chance to succeed, and to know that there is something out there for them in the future. Learning how to be successful in mathematics is one tool that should not be overlooked.
Remember when you got your Scholastic magazines when you were in school? You looked forward to the stories and puzzles! The magazine now has a focus on math. These will be used weekly to learn more in-depth skills that are aligned to the Common Core and State standards while reading stories that are currently in the news.
The middle school students will become more engaged in math class, see examples of math problems as related to real life concepts, and improve their skills in math.
Plus, these can provide assistance to parents who are trying to help their students at home by practicing the problems with them. I've had several parents ask for examples of our math problems with explanatory notes, so this is a nice aid not just for the kids, but also moms and dads at home who want to improve their understanding for math problems they struggled with as kids.
