My students need books and visual supports to support reading in the math classroom. The books and posters about mathematicians will show students the progression math has made over time.
I work with an amazing staff and students at a very diverse, high poverty rate school. Many of my students face struggles both inside and out of the classroom. Often the students I see have typically struggled with math and need additional methods to help give them a deeper understanding. All of my students want to learn, but not all have the confidence and belief in themselves to get them through the hard stages of learning complex concepts. I am excited to find different methods to engage and excite my students about math.
My Project
This year I am focusing on making math more real to my students. As I am looking around my room I am noticing I am missing literature to help make my vision come true. Through the many books about math that I requested about famous mathematicians and how mathematicians are people too, along with the posters showing the diversity in mathematicians, and the significant contributions that all of them have made over time, I hope that students will see how they could be one of those mathematicians too. I also am wanting to support our language arts department by encouraging and providing students with a variety of different math books that I hope will ignite their passion for learning mathematics.
