Do you know what it feels like to struggle in math class? My students do, they struggle with the comprehension, therefore they struggle with real world related math problems. The books I choose are books to help my students understand real world math situations.
My students are those students in school that struggle not only with math but with reading as well.
They are in a program called APSIRE, which is double block of math and ELA (reading and language arts class). They come to me so that I can help them achieve their goals of being able to understand high order math skills and solving real world math issues. My students attend a high performing school, but at the same time it has about a 45% free and reduced lunch program. Students from other schools in the county choose to attend the school so they may learn from teachers like me.
My Project
The books I choose will help my students see where math can be used in the real world and not just problems that I put up on the board for them to solve. I want my students to learn that they can do anything they want in life as long as they put their minds to it. They can help build cathedrals or even buildings in a large city, all they have to do understand where the math comes into play for each of these situations. They may grow up and become a computer programmer and the book about the internet may be the one that inspired them to achieve that goal. I am hoping the book about surviving middle school math will help them feel they can do it, even when others tell them they can't. I believe in each one of my students, and even after they leave, I still check up on them.
This project is very important to me because my students success is important to me.
I show them real world situations every day in class but they don't always see why they need the math skills for them. Most of my students think the math is just something that will go away after they have graduated high school, but these books can show them just how much they will use math in their life.
