Reading in Math Class? Math Literature to Engage and Enhance
My students need quality math literature such as "Multiplying Menace: The Revenge of Rumpelstiltskin" and "The Fly on the Ceiling: A Math Myth" to help them build their mathematical understanding!
My fifth grade math classroom is a safe, challenging learning environment. My students come to me with their mind already made up...about math, that is! By fifth grade, they have decided whether or not they are good at math. They either love it or they hate it!
My goal is to change their attitude about math.
My school is a rural, Title 1 school with students from a variety of backgrounds. I want my students to change their math mindset!
My Project
Math literature is a way to engage reluctant mathematicians in learning difficult concepts. Books such as "Multiplying Menace: The Revenge of Rumpelstiltskin" by Pam Calvert and "The Fly on the Ceiling: A Math Myth" by Julie Glass present concepts to students throughout the plot of a story. This makes the math more about meaning and less about numbers on a page.
My students need texts that present math concepts in ways that are enjoyable and easy to understand!
Students can engage in the story, and begin to make sense of the math throughout the book. These books will provide me with the opportunity not only to read aloud to my students, but also to use the books as a launching point for our hands on activities. For example, in "Multiplying Menace", we can compare what happens when you multiply a number by a whole number and when you multiply a number by a fraction.
My students will be able to go back and reread these books time and time again. Not only will they be able to enjoy the story, but they will also be reviewing prior learning! My students need these texts to reach their potential as mathematicians!
