I will be teaching 2nd grade for the 1st time in my career this upcoming school year! It is my first venture into the primary grades. The students at my school come from supportive families, and are excited to come to school. I work very hard in my classroom to form close relationships and connect with the students and their families. My students will have a wide variety of abilities, levels, interests and needs. This incoming group of students are resilient and eager to learn.
We will be focusing on building on foundational skills, improving their higher level abilities, creating more independence and ownership in their learning and striving to prepare them for the transition into the intermediate grades.
My Project
Our 2nd grade classroom follows a reading program which uses picture books to focus on multiple literary elements and content standards. Throughout the study, we identify story elements, make connections, analyze characters and draw conclusions from our inferences. Our classroom needs the picture books used in the program for 2nd Semester.
These books focus on a variety of situations, create opportunities for students to connect in multiple ways to the stories, and provide an avenue for building background knowledge.
I've experienced the excitement and engagement introducing new books brings to the students, and the motivation that follows. These books will be used across all langue and reading subject areas.
