Our school is attended by approximately 460 2nd through 5th graders. We have been continuously working to get all of our students on their grade level for reading and to instill of love of reading into all of them.
We participate in a Cooperative Learning reading program from John Hopkins University, Success for All.
This program puts students into a leveled reading group for 90 minutes of the day. During this time students not all read, but work cooperatively and attainable, data-driven goals.
A large part of the program being successful, is students reading on their own for 20 minutes a night. This is a goal we have as a school that will help us attain our yearly goal of making sure 80% of our students pass their SOL test and are reading on or above their grade level!
My Project
We are raising money for our to create a prize cart for our students who do their reading homework nightly. Research shows that reading just 20 minutes a night has many positive effects on students now as well as in their future success. We would love to have positive incentives for students who complete their nightly reading. We have gotten our return rate up to 85%, but we are looking for a way to break that plateau and strive for even more participation. We would appreciate anyone who can support our cause as we strive to create lifelong readers at our school!
