I am a Media Specialist for a high school in rural Pender County, North Carolina. We currently have 51% of our students receiving free lunch and 6.75% are English Limited. Being a poor county, with an increasing population, our funds are extremely limited. Also, we have a very diverse social and economic pool of students. We are in the process of implementing a special reading section to introduce Theatrical Reading to our students. The purpose of our program is to set up displays in the media center that revolve around popular films. Often students do not realize that many of the films that they see and hear about are actually developed from books. By making the link between films and books, we will fulfill our purpose in encouraging life-long reading habits for our students. Our program has been on going for the past four months and, from our observations, it is successful. Records show that students have checked out 15 film-related books since the program started. To continue our “Reading Hollywood” program we will need one book, The Notebook, and two movie posters, The Notebook and I, Robot. In addition, we would like to enhance our display of these materials by the use of a poster hanging system. As soon as we receive these resources we will place them on display and all 630 students at our school will have the opportunity to engage in reading for self-interest and fun.
