My Students

I work in a K-5 elementary school building in Cedar Rapids, IA. Our students bring a tremendous diversity that we welcome and embrace. We have a high percentage of students who are using the free and reduced-price lunch program.

We want kids to be curious and passionate about their learning.

At our building, we know that kids are more than a test score on a piece of paper. We value individual differences and celebrate each student's special uniqueness! A one size fits all approach to education won't work for our students.

My Project

We will use these books, Morning Girl, to study America's history during our guided reading time. This will allow us to save time by teaching two things at once. Kids will do reading outside of group time and participate in lively discussions, write connections and questions about the text.

Students will gain a detailed understanding of the time period by reading this historical fiction of a young girl encountering Columbus and his crew during his early explorations.

I have used these books in other buildings before and have seen how this historical fiction text really hooks kids into learning about the content.
