My Students

We are an inquisitive, fun, smart and excited community of learners. We are diverse in every sense of the word - culturally, economically, racially, linguistically. Our school was rated one of the most diverse schools in Oakland, pulling from many socioeconomic levels. We are proud of our cooperation and support of the children. We come together in the classroom to create a common learning community.

We are embracing fiction as a way to study history because stories are what makes us human and motivates us to communicate and write with passion.

My Project

"The Balloon Boy of San Francisco" by Dorothy Leland is a recent and amazing piece of accurate historic fiction. It references real events and has real characters that live amazing lives. Reading it takes you through Gold Rush San Francisco like you are alive in that time. The main character, Ready Gates, is lovable, clever, smart and is a realistic portrayal of someone our age surviving in that time.

We want to learn Gold Rush history and learn how to write a literary essay together in one project we feel energized about.

This book is hard to put down and hard not to talk about. We need a copy in each student's hand to really make this happen.
