My Students
My students come from low economic and socioeconomic backgrounds, but that does not stop them from achieving great things academically and in sports and physical activities. My students do whatever it takes to get things done, from staying after school and walking home, to skipping lunch to practice for tests or games. Many of my 14 to 18-year-olds already work jobs, babysit, mow lawns, and more just to try and save enough to get a college education and graduate.
My students inspire me daily.
All of my students eat free lunch because their economic status is so low across the board. They understand the value and importance of books and materials, but often they can't afford to buy these things on their own. Parents work multiple jobs and are hard to reach, but they care greatly about the success of their children. These are my children, and I do whatever I can to help them succeed as much as possible not just in my class and on the field, but in life.
My Project
My students are reading, on average, at a third grade level in the ninth grade. I want them to have the same experiences as their better-prepared classmates. I want them to read Romeo and Juliet and the Odyssey and appreciate and understand the content and the language.
Graphic novels have been proven to help under-performing students succeed where traditional texts have failed.
I want to be a source of literary enrichment to my students in a way they haven't seen before. We are going to read the complex texts, but the goal is to give them options to guide and assist them as we read with the intent of closing their literacy gap.
