Do you love going to the bookstore and picking out a new book that interests you? My students work hard each day, earning rewards for positive behavior. These rewards can be used to pick a book that they can keep for their very own, many of my students have no books at home.
My students come from varying lifestyles.
I have students who live in $500,000 homes and students who live in their cars. Each year, more than half my class is on free or reduced lunch. We are in a rural district. Our building houses 13 third grade rooms and 14 fourth grade rooms.
My Project
Many of my students and their families are worried about where their next meal is coming from. They cannot buy books for their children and education is not the most important thing when you are hungry and homeless. Most of these children crave books and have none at home that they can read. Research shows that students who come from impoverished homes enter school with a 3,000 hour deficit in language. The best way to help these children is to immerse them in these leveled reading books that they can read over and over again.
By helping students "earn" reward points to purchase books, it will help instill pride in them and a deeper appreciation of the book.
Your gift will not only provide reading material, but a sense of accomplishment and improved self-esteem.
