Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are kids who lack some things because of the economic level of this area, and yet they stand out in so many ways. They are curious, caring, considerate kids, with issues but leaders dedicated to their education and community. Most are bilingual and hope to improve, others want to be bilingual and are trying really hard to learn Spanish. And like any teenager at this age, they are so willing to learn as long as they are given a little freedom and the option to select how to do it. So why not give them a class library in Spanish from which they can choose what additional vocabulary to learn, what cultural aspect to understand, what country to visit, what connection to make and what to imagine? My students will be ever grateful for this opportunity.
My Project
For today's kids sitting down to read a book is an undeveloped ability that has many implications. My goal is to put at their fingertips a Spanish library in which they become the pirate of the ship, the princess of the story, the new girl in school, or the boy vs. an unknown place, as they learn and master a second language. With this Spanish library for the class, they will not only develop the ability to read something printed and become independent readers, which will benefit them for the rest of their lives, they will also learn to make connections and to compare their culture and communities against those in the stories. In addition, they will be acquiring a second language along the way and will be learning about the geography, practices, products and other factors that are part of the so rich and varied Spanish-speaking culture. With these books, my students will have no limit on imagination and will be able to fly with their imagination as far as they want. The power of imagination is wonderful, and much more wonderful is to imagine in two languages!
