Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students are this school live in a very small community with a public library that is only open for a few short hours every week. These students do not have access to books to read for pleasure at their reading levels. The books I'm requesting will be available in the classroom but a formal "borrowing" procedure will be put in place.
Reading should be fun no matter what your skill level.
My students are all general education students who have learning disabilities. Many struggle with reading whether it's decoding, comprehension or basic reading skills. They want to read but many read well below their grade level. The books that are available to them are not interesting or relate-able. In their own words, these kids "don't want to read baby books!" The books I'm requesting are all high-interest books geared toward elementary students who are reading below grade level; books that are really interesting, that students want to read, should be accessible to all students.
My Project
All of my students are struggling readers with learning disabilities. Reading is challenging for many of them. Books at their level are usually designed for much younger children. They are often embarrassed by reading "baby books" and would really benefit from having a library of high-interest books that were designed with low readers in mind.
Students will be able to read interesting books at their reading levels.
They will not be singled out by peers or each other for reading books more appropriate to younger students. These kids know they have reading challenges but they are still interested in fun and unusual topics. Hi-Low allow students to read about interesting and fun topics that are grade level appropriate at their reading levels.
