My students need an assortment of graphic novels and accessible "picture books" that will turn my reluctant readers into voracious readers.

My Students

My students are some of the best! They come from an area with a booming population. We have an average class size of 40 kids, and they are still outstanding even when they have to sit in chairs instead of desks, fight their way through crowded hallways, and wait in a 20 minute line to get their lunch.

Though they struggle through large class sizes and limited materials, they still say, "Thank you," after every class, and show up thoughtful, eager, and ready to learn!

My Project

A few months ago, I was doing a book "spotlight" for one my ELA classes. As my excitement built around the book I was showcasing, I began talking in general about how magical reading is. And of course, a student right in front of me whispered to his friends, "Reading sucks." I pulled him aside and asked him why he felt that way. There were a few reasons that not only he felt, but many of his peers echoed as well: our school library is too limited, they needed better options, they resoundingly wanted more graphic novels and picture books. With these reasons haunting me for the last several weeks, I decided I needed to make a change.

Because if I had to pick one thing that makes the biggest difference in the quality of any person’s education, the quality of their life, really, it would be reading.

And I’m not really talking about the basic ability to read—I’m talking about reading for pleasure, to satisfy curiosities, to understand how people work and find solace in knowing we are not the only ones who think and feel the way we do. This is the kind of reading that helps students become kind, compassionate, empathetic, informed, and literate people--the kind of people that our future world desperately needs.

Our school is new, and our library is just too limited. My goal for this project is to simply get more engaging books for my personal library to put in student's hands. My dream is that once there, those books will help transform them into the voracious readers I know they can be.
