Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has been struggling to keep teachers. Changing to new standards and other economic pressures have had an impact on this community and, by extension, my students. My students are curious, rambunctious, and earnest.

They are mostly low income students in a predominately rural Hispanic community.

All students receive free lunches at our school. Many student have family members who used to be incarcerated at the now closed private prison. We have many At Risk student and many students's reading level is well below 7th grade, some as far behind at 5 grades.

My Project

There are few class sets of novels for the 7th grade. Most books that have more than one copy are housed in our library where the majority of books are for K-5. The Long Walk to Water will not only help my students appreciate other world views, but also provide new books on their reading level that we can read as a class. Thus far, we have read only online novels, which is difficult when technology hasn't caught up to our use in our district.

The Long Walk to Water will provide much needed non-fiction reading experiences for my students as part of the Common Core guidelines for reading.
