My K-2nd grade students have learning, visual, emotional and or physical disabilities that interfere with their daily educational and social needs. They come from low income families. Their reading levels range from pre-primer to beginning 1st grade.
They come to class discouraged about learning new things.
It is a battle some days to get children to pick up books and want to read for pleasure rather than "they have too". They need encouragement and lots of support to engage in reading and math.
My Project
I am hoping that with rewards and incentives my students will reach new and unbelievable reading goals. I want to develop a chart and keep track of what and how many books they each read. When they reach new levels a small reward such as plastic toy balls, mini action figures, bracelets, glowsticks, Pokemon trading cards and more will be offered. Currently, they moan and groan when it is time to read. All they do is look at the pictures.
I would love to see my students' self-esteem rise and flourish through positive reading experiences and most importantly gain the true love of reading.
