Many of the connections between neurons in the brain are made during adolescence. Studies have shown that those who are shown love, given adequate care, and have a variety of experiences and opportunities from a young age have more neural connections in the brain. Many of my students grew up without those opportunities and I don't want them to miss out on any more. Despite extreme challenges, my students are driven, want to succeed, think critically, and are curious about the world around them.
My students continue to be inspired to change the world and realize that their individual, daily actions impact their community!
I would like to provide my students with a classroom environment where income doesn't matter, a place where they have access to the same technology as a high school with many resources. I am passionate about using technology and hands-on activities in the classroom to further engage them and inspire them to be science superheroes!
My Project
One of the virtual classrooms I have set up for students links to a variety of websites that help them relax. There are wild animal cams that they can watch, crosswords and sudokus to complete, and a link to the NY Times bestsellers list. By having the list readily available to view, students can find a book that interests them. I realized though that even if they find a book, it doesn't mean it will be available at the library, especially if it's a popular one.
By having popular books in my classroom library, there will be more availability for students to check them out through me!
Along with books and our relaxation theme, we are also requesting coloring books and snacks. Many of my students have a tendency to leave their homes in a rush and skip breakfast. Having a few simple breakfast items will help ensure they don't start their day hungry.
To clean up those crumbs, a small handheld vacuum will be super handy!
