First grade is a huge transition for children and a lot of learning and development occurs during these times! Students learn how to work independently, how to play on the "big playground," and they learn how to read in first grade!
My class is full of excited, active learners who are always looking to gain new knowledge and experience new things!
Their enthusiasm for school is infectious and makes working with first grade my absolute favorite. My class is made up of a variety of learners including everything from a cluster of English Language Learners who don't speak any English, to students who came into first grade reading Harry Potter.
As any teacher knows, meeting the needs of each individual student is essential and in 1st grade, teaching reading is extremely valuable. No matter what, I strive to encourage my students to read and demonstrate how much fun and excitement can come from books!
My Project
As 1st graders are approaching the end of the school year, there are many areas to focus on in order to ensure readiness for 2nd grade. One of the most crucial areas is accuracy, fluency, and comprehension in reading.
More importantly, this is an opportunity for 1st graders to discover a love of reading!
Through this project, I am hoping to combine a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts with close reading, Daily 5, and other classroom strategies to reinforce how important and exciting it is to be a reader!
With this collection of books, students will be able to study vocabulary, 1st grade concepts of animals and plants, and even travel on adventures through chapter books. During Daily 5, students will be given choice and opportunity with text, while also developing their reading fluency and accuracy. At the same time, students will close read non-fiction texts and get exposed to new concepts, vocabulary, and overall excitement. There is no limit to how National Geographic and The Magic Tree House books can invoke interest and love of reading so that students can not only learn to read in first grade, but read to learn.
