This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are at our alternative school for a variety of reasons. With our structured and nurturing environment, and with smaller class sizes and a better teacher to student ratio, we have built a school environment where our students succeed.
Our students are able to rewrite their school stories into narratives of enjoyment, success, and empowerment.
Our small class sizes give us the flexibility to take innovative field trips and construct unique and creative lessons. We are only hindered by funding issues, as we currently have no PTA or the financial support that a PTA provides.
My Project
These materials will help support my students' reading in tangible ways. The addition of new books to our shelves, including high-interest graphic novels, will continue to motivate students to read inside--and outside--of school! Adding a rug and floor pillows to the library will give my students a comfortable space to land with their books.
Building time for choice-based reading into our school day is an essential part of our classes.
Having inviting school spaces that draw our readers into reading makes a difference in engaging students in those daily literacy activities. The books in this project feature key choices for pleasure reading, especially literature that represents my students. Additionally, specific WWII historical fiction and non-fiction titles which supplement our curriculum through a creative WWII project are included.
