Welcome to my wonderful 4th grade classroom! Last year I had the privilege of teaching my first set of kiddos. 23 of the most wonderful youngsters I have ever met! I have wanted to be a teacher ever since I was 9 and made my younger sister sit through my "lessons" as I taught her to read, count, and write her name. After a wonderful 10 years of working at Starbucks while raising my own family and putting myself through school, my dream of becoming a teacher finally came true!
Strong reading skills are at the core of my instruction, day-in and day-out.
On the first day of school I had 7 parents tell me their child did not like reading! WOW, already in 4th grade how do kids not like reading?! By the end of the year 6 of those children told me how much they like to read now because of how much I read in the classroom and made reading skills more fun than work.
My favorite part of teaching fourth graders (other than actually being able to hang out with such amazing young people) is the connection to literature I share with so many of them.
My Project
In fourth grade students feel one of two ways about reading: They have found a passionate love for reading and carry a book with them everywhere they go or they are feeling completely overwhelmed by the rigor of reading expectations of such young learners.
At such a vulnerable age it is imperative for educators to nurture the love for reading that most students at one point or another had.
As only a second year teacher and one that also fell victim in fourth grade to the loss of love for reading I am here to do everything in my power to make sure every student of mine has the tools they need for exceptional reading skills. This in turn will set these children up to be life long readers.
I am hoping to add high-interest readers to my library next year as well as books that will interest my students in History. Starting in the fall I will also be implementing the Daily 5 rotation center in my ELA block for optimal differentiation. For these centers I will need a number of different materials in order to better differentiate for my students. These materials include grammar sorts, literature matching sorts, text evidence center, and of course BOOKS!
