My students need nonfiction books and a place to choose their books from for their own levels and interests.
Can you imagine students being able to choose what they want to read to gain knowledge about the world? Some of my students are beginning to enjoy reading. I would like to see my students excited when they can choose and read their choice of books.
My second grade students vary in abilities and interests.
They are beginning to enjoy reading a variety of books. They can get very excited when finding a book that captures their interests and attention. My school has a combination of military and resident students whose background knowledge varies. They live in a moderate neighborhood where some students are the second generation of their family to attend the school.
The students will take turns participating in their guided reading groups as the other students are involved in working on vocabulary, spelling, reading and comprehension. The nonfiction books will give them an opportunity to choose what they are interested in and at their reading levels during their independent time.
The donations of the nonfiction books will give them the chance to read and gain background knowledge of a variety of topics.
It will foster their enjoyment of reading and improve their literacy as they are exposed to different books. As they continue to choose what they want to read I hope it will also give them a love of reading which they will take with them.
