Reading for Fun in the Spanish Classroom: It's Really Possible!
Help me give my students a subscription to a magazine in Spanish created just for students, as well as other engaging reading materials appropriate for their language level.
I am a Spanish teacher in a K-12 school district, which is housed all in one building. We have about 80 students enrolled in our high school, and I am the only Spanish teacher for the whole district. This means that I teach all levels across 5th through 12 grade. The community is about 99% white and homogeneous. The students I work with are overwhelmingly impoverished and most come from broken homes. Despite this, I have the privilege of working with many students that are excited about all the Spanish has to offer, from new and different cultures to expanding their horizons and stepping outside of their comfort zones in order to communicate in another language.
My students get excited to be able to see and use Spanish in many different ways- from advertisements to movies, television shows and books.
Because these students don't get exposed to other cultures often in their day to day lives, they get excited when they see what they are learning in the Spanish classroom used in the real world. With your support, I am hoping to continue to expand their horizons and offer them more opportunities to use and practice their Spanish.
My Project
Many different studies have shown how reading in the target language is helpful for second language acquisition. I have been pulling together reading resources on my own to have for free and voluntary reading (FVR) which takes place for 10 to 15 minutes every Friday. The purpose of FVR is for students to pick materials that interest them. By giving them choice in their reading materials, they will read more for longer amounts of time and enjoy the activity more. They will also acquire and remember parts the language that is important to them, thus using it more.
With these new books and reading materials, students will be able to have a variety of books and magazine from which to choose, all at a level comprehensible to them, all in Spanish.
Because they are language learners, traditional heritage language books that are comprehensible to them are books that are written for children, which for the most part will not interest my high school students. These books and magazines have been chosen specifically for their interest factor to high school students, as well as for their comprehensibility for second language learners.
