My students need some higher level books to increase their lexile levels. A lot of my students have really started to enjoy the Rick Riordian series and are fighting over who get to read it first.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have been given the wonderful opportunity to teach 44 great students! My students come to school each day and work hard to be successful. I teach at a high poverty school where most of my students live with only one of their parents or with grandparents. They try their best to use what they have to succeed. These students come to school with a smile on their face each day and hug for me each morning. They always say good morning and always have a good evening when they leave.

I want my students to succeed academically, and I will do whatever it takes to make it happen.

I have learned that it takes many different avenues for success but I plan to make sure we go down each path together.

My Project

We need books. My students will use these books on a daily basis to increase their vocabulary and expanding their imagination. My students are able to relate to the characters in these books, for example in the Rick Riordan series, Percy is a good kid but not a great student. Bouncing from school to school, he’s often unable to control his temper, is challenged by his ADHD and dyslexia, and has never gotten a grade above a C. But as he learns at Camp Half-Blood, the summer camp for the children of the gods, all of the demigods have the same disabilities he has. The ADHD actually is meant to serve them well in battle as they have to think fast and be extremely mobile, and the dyslexia represents a brain hardwired to read Greek rather than English.

We are also requesting Percy Jackson, Willow Run, Genevieve's War and The Gary Paulsen collection.
