My students are amazing! I teach at a high-poverty school where our students face challenges inside and outside of the classroom; yet, they are hardworking, passionate learners.
Despite all the negatives, my students come to school every day full of energy and ready to learn.
They love moving around the classroom and working with each other to learn new concepts. We work together to make our class a family where everyone belongs. They care about each other and encourage each other to be their best.
My Project
My students come from diverse backgrounds. Books are one way for me to honor my students' differences.
My students need to be able to relate to characters in books.
When they see characters that are like them, they feel an immediate connection. They feel connected to the world. They feel like someone understands them and know what they're going through.
In addition, when they read books about people who are different, they are exposed to new cultures and ways of doing things. Their minds are opened and their empathy grows.
These books will help improve my students' emotional well-being. They will feel supported and connected. Students with healthy emotions have a better chance of being healthy overall.
