Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My classroom consist of 20 students from a predominately rural area. Many of the children come from homes with very limited reading materials, so the school environment becomes their main resource towards becoming better readers and/or increasing their reading skills.

Due to drastic budget cuts, there are no funds available to purchase additional books for the classrooms. Our classroom sets are becoming old and torn and replacements are desperately needed.

We need various sets of leveled reading materials in order to increase their reading skills as we do guided reading. I also want to teach my children various ways to research and the CD Rom student library would be a great asset to do this as well Reading a variety of literature improves a student's reading skills and helps them grow to love reading. Reading is so important for children, especially in their early years of learning. I want to encourage my students to read as much as possible.

With your help, you will make it possible for my students to become wonderful readers. You will make a difference in the reading abilities of not just one classroom of students, but for many students that will follow!
