Our students live in an urban, high poverty area. Many of them are faced with issues that are very difficult to cope with. We have a large population of English Language Learners as well as students with special needs.
Many of our students live at or below the poverty level, and for this reason, 100% of our students receive both free breakfast and free lunch daily.
We give many of our students "Blessings in a Backpack" on Fridays where we fill their backpack with food to bring home for the weekend.
My Project
It's 2020 and we need to update our library to share more books with children that address issues including diversity, inclusiveness, wearing masks, and social distancing. With books like "All are Welcome" by Alexandra Penfold, we will be able to start the school year off right by creating a welcoming atmosphere for all.
These books will spark important conversations in our classroom about how to take a stand against racial injustice and teasing, as well as help our children learn about empathy, self-confidence, inclusion, kindness, acceptance, safety, and finding the courage to connect with others.
These books will be read by a school counselor in individual counseling, small group, and whole classroom settings.
