Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first-year teacher working in a Title I school in Fort Worth, Texas. I've been working with students in this district for 5 years (as an intern, inclusion TA, and student teacher), and I'm so excited to step foot into my own classroom as a 2nd grade, dual language teacher.
A vast majority of students at our school receive free or reduced lunch, and for most of them, school is the only place where they can experience a worry-free environment.
In addition, all of the students I'll be teaching are ELLs who are tackling the task to become fully bilingual, bicultural and biliterate.
My Project
Reading is a crucial component of any student's academic development. I strive to provide my students with as many books of varying genres, levels and interests as possible.
Studies have shown that language learners benefit from mastering their first language before fully acquiring a second language.
Therefore, I also hope to supply them with Spanish books that will continue cultivating their native language.
I have been building my classroom library with used books from garage sales, discount bookstores, and thrift stores. However, affordable Spanish books are really hard to find, and I can only spend so much money as a first-year teacher. Please help my students continue to grow their love for reading by providing books they enjoy in their first language!
