This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are mostly African Americans and Hispanics from the lower socioeconomic background. My school is a public charter school and we use the limited resources we have to empower our students to set college and career goals. Interactive learning is what engages my students the most, and as such, paper and books are treasured commodities. My students love to hold actual books in their hands. I find this to be amazing considering that there are growing technological devices that students spend hours on that do not involve academic reading.
My Project
These books by Julia Alvarez will enable my Hispanic students to have materials that they can relate to and will simultaneously expose my African American students to another culture. The box of paper will enable my students to create and complete various assignments and projects. The whiteboard markers will be used with my students' handheld whiteboards in group discussions, debates, oral quizzes, and check for understanding questions. The rug will provide an area in the classroom for my students to feel relaxed when reading not only for academic purposes but also to expose them to different cultures.
